Infertility Q & A

What is infertility?

Infertility is the inability to become pregnant after at least a year of having unprotected sex. If you’re over 35, you may have infertility issues following unprotected sex for at least six months without conception.

The underlying cause of infertility lies with the woman in one-third of the cases and the man in another one-third. There may be no identifiable reason for the infertility issues in the remaining situations.

What causes infertility?

There may be one or more reasons why you have difficulties becoming pregnant or maintaining a viable, full-term pregnancy.

In females, the cause of infertility might relate to:

  • Endometriosis

  • Ovulation disorders

  • Fallopian tube blockage

  • Premature ovarian failure

  • Abnormalities in your reproductive organs

If you undergo treatment for cervical cancer or other reproductive cancers, you may also be at increased risk for infertility.

In men, the causes of infertility might include low sperm count, premature ejaculation, and testicular cancer.

How is infertility diagnosed?

To determine what’s causing your infertility issues, the team at Katie Ostrom, MD, reviews your personal and family medical history and may perform diagnostic testing services, like:

  • Pelvic exam

  • Blood work

  • Ultrasounds

  • Hysteroscopy

Based on the results of your diagnostic testing, the team can customize a treatment plan to improve your chances of achieving a healthy, viable pregnancy.

How is infertility treated?

Depending on the cause of your infertility, the team may initially recommend lifestyle and dietary modifications to prepare your body for pregnancy. You may also need medications to stimulate ovulation.

If you have endometriosis or a blockage in your fallopian tubes, you may need a minimally invasive procedure to treat it.

The team also offers fertility assistance options in-office, including in-vitro fertilization (IVF). IVF involves the stimulation and retrieval of mature eggs from your ovaries, which the team then combines with your partner’s sperm in a medical lab. Several days after fertilization, they implant the resulting embryos into your uterus to achieve a viable pregnancy.

After you conceive, the team offers comprehensive in-office obstetrics services to guide you through your pregnancy, labor, and delivery.
